DL: Benefits of an EOL Doula to a Funeral Home
BONUS: Community Education Brochure.
Take this to your local funeral home when you want to introduce the concept of the end-of-life doula. Tell them about what you do and how you can help their pre-need clients especially.
Note: There are funeral homes suing home funeral guides, and many home funeral guides refer to themselves as death/end-of-life doulas. See the Institute for Justice on a case in California HERE. Do your due diligence before you set up practice and decide if you will be providing home funeral education to your families. If so, please do a search on the cases being brought before the courts and take action to protect yourself.
If you are not doing home funerals, know that you may still get resistance as most people do not know about us yet. If you are not going to provide after death care that would in essence take business away from your local funeral homes, you most probably have nothing to worry about. But please check with your state Funeral Consumer Alliance to find out what is the climate in your area.
You can also point them to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). The NHPCO is hospice’s oldest and largest trade organization and they invited End-of-Life Doulas to a council they created for the purpose of educating their 6000+ member hospices about how end-of-life doulas benefit the community and hospices as well as families. This is a major win for end-of-life doulas professional value. Review here: End-of-Life Doula Advisory Council.
