The Family Journey

The Family Journey is our non-certificate program for families who are directly dealing with the end stage of life with their person. When someone you love is not being cured or they are in what is termed ‘end-stage’ disease processes, nothing else matters but to figure out what is going on. We are propelled into a foreign land. We do not know the terrain or we are finding out that the terrain is barren. Everything becomes a struggle of looking for appropriate information we can trust, and are on a never-ending journey of making the next right decision. And the thing is, this family journey may take a year or more. This last stage is not just limited to when a person is on hospice service, so most of the information in the Family Journey is also appropriate for people who are seriously ill and will make it into recovery. We address the issue of proper care and resources whether you are dying or not (non-certificate program).

End-of-Life Doula Certificate Program

Certified CareDoula® is our End-of-Life Doula Certificate Program for people who want a formal education in all aspects of end-of-life care, issues, options, planning as well as intensive training on the art of accompanying the dying and the professional aspects of creating your own end-of-life service. The people that are drawn to this important work are gifted with bedside presence, however they got it, they know it. What we find is that is not usually what they want more of, what they want to learn is all the things they must know in addition to serve on a higher level. The person who wants to invest into this level of training is on a path of fulfilling their life’s purpose and to finally invest in what matters to them, for their own very personal reasons. The only way to get this level of end-of-life training is to work in hospice yourself for 15 years, like Deanna did. Certified CareDoula® is a powerful approach, proven from 20 years of Deanna’s own private end-of-life doula service work as well as training trailblazers around the world since 2010 (Certified CareDoula® is the first End-of-Life Doula Certificate Program in the US).

Corporate: New Employee Training

The only way a new hospice employee–nurse, chaplain, social worker, certified nursing assistant–really knows the ins and outs of the work is once they’ve been on the job about a solid year to 2. Everyone knows that. There is a ‘green time’ when they are just doing what they think should be done and that is coming from their years of training in other fields. They receive 2 weeks of learning end-of-life modules at a desk, completely disengaged and bored out of their mind, usually followed by an uninspiring 2 weeks of shadowing someone (hopefully who is a well trained and very experienced person) in your company who is not overburdened from too many patients. Then, they are alone, given phone numbers to call and everyone hopes for the best. It does not have to be this way. Your new employees will be at the 2 year mark of comfort within 6 months with us. Save your company’s reputation, keep your employee’s respect and save money with our training and mentoring. We are fully staffed with hospice nurse veterans who are dually trained as end-of-life doulas. Perfect combination. Contact Us About Our Pilot, ‘Project Mentor’…

Why CareDoula® Education is here.

CareDoula® Education’s mission is to equip and empower people to demand quality care so they do NOT suffer as they are living with serious illness (especially the latter stages). It is in the latter stages of serious illness when most suffering is likely to occur–as a person is approaching their dying.

And herein lies the struggle. This time period from ‘when-treatments-begin-to-stop-working (WTBTSW)’ to entering hospice service can be such a nebulous time between life and death. When you ask a person about their death journey with a family member, this is the time period about when you hear the most awful stories.

It can be a literal nightmare. This is the time period about which physicians like Dr. Atul Gawande, Dr. Ira Byock, Dr. Jessica Zitter are writing their books. They are agreeing that as a society (and within healthcare) we are not dealing with a person’s decline towards their death appropriately and that is resulting in so much suffering—physically and in every other way.

CareDoula® Education’s focus is this time period from WTBTSW to hospice entry, and it is one of the messiest times of life with so many reasons why this is so. Everything we do at CareDoula® Education is to make people aware about all ways to address each of the reasons and the steps to take for it.

And we want to get our CareDoula® approach to as many people as possible to relieve as much suffering as possible. Deanna’s entire strategy is to either serve you herself and/or teach you how to help your own family and the people in your own circles, and teach you how to advocate for others, and teach your employees the best hospice hacks in their first year of hospice employment. We have a program for each one of these end-goals.

Learn and then share in your conversations in your communities. Spread the word. We are here to support you as you support others where you live and work. We are all affected by the dying of those we love, it’s part of life. For most of us, this is usually shocking and grievous, even though we know it’s coming. There is pain surrounding it that will never go away.

And there is a layer of fear, pain and suffering that is needless. This is 100% true. And THAT is what we are here to address, so that way you can deal with the important matters of what is in front of you. Needless suffering should be removed as quickly as possible. We know how to do that.
