Why Mentorship Matters

Most people imagine that once they complete training, they will feel ready because they know they are good at being there for people, and all they need are the ‘nuts and bolts.’

But that is rarely how this particular work unfolds. The real questions appear as you are processing the knowledge, integrating your history and your vision with what you are learning. And especially when you begin to take your first steps out there.

There are a million questions people have as they begin shaping their own service…the real boundaries of what their role actually looks like and where it begins, where and when it ends and how to handle all the interactions in between.

And once you are ready to step out… there are all the ‘firsts.’ The first time you promote yourself, or plan and do your first community education session or take your first consultation call, your first visit and so on.

And then a family member asks something you weren’t expecting or you encounter a situation that doesn’t fit neatly into a lesson.

This is where mentorship is invaluable, because these kinds of things can paralyze a person who is new to this. So many students have reported that moments like these kept them frozen and stuck trying to talk themselves out of their fear unsuccessfully.

Mentorship works because when you are pulling together the pieces of something this serious, it helps to have someone with years of experience (with many different situations) who can help you think through what you’re seeing, understand the patterns beneath the situation, and help you develop the judgment that only comes through experience and guidance.

Information can teach skills but mentorship cuts down significantly in the time it takes to develop the discernment you need to practice with actual confidence (instead of trying to pretend you are confident).

What Makes This Mentorship Different

Many mentoring programs focus on accountability, motivation, and business growth. Those things have their place, but end-of-life work requires something much deeper.

For more than 26 years, Deanna has worked within end of life scenarios at the bedside, within hospice for years as a board certified Hospice RN (CHPN) and 21 years in private practice, family consultation, professional education, and service development.

She also provides corporate consultations and develops end-of-life doula programs within hospices, teaches End-of-Life Doula Training within graduate Master’s Level Chaplaincy Programs and has accomplished many ‘firsts’ herself. Currently, CareDoula® is one of the leading educators in Latin America during their current explosive growth.

As your mentor, she knows the terrain of ‘pioneer,’ of building something where there currently is nothing. She knows what it takes to move when you are afraid and do what has not been done before. She is a leader’s doula and guide.

Her unusual experience within hospice and the oncology floor (at the same time) provided her with a unique perspective on the sufferings of people at the end of life prior to hospice entry. This is something that every doula MUST have a deep understanding of.

Deanna has helped people develop creative solutions for their regions based on their skillset and the barriers to care for their particular area since she began in 2005. This is terrain she knows well. And she very generously shares with the people who work with her.

You do NOT need to recreate the wheel or guess your way through any longer.

As you work with Deanna you will:

  • Feel relief as you begin to see how this work can actually fit into your life—and that it’s possible to sustain a service unique to you that will not burn you out.
  • Feel steadier because you have someone to guide you and the doubts you’ve been carrying start to make sense and you no longer need to second guess yourself.
  • Become more confident, not in a hopeful ‘act as if’ way, but real confidence because you have structure to rely on and are no longer overthinking.
  • Understand the role as it actually is (not just conceptually) as the gaps that no one talks about begin to close.
  • Recognize your place in this work, holding a grounded, human, non-clinical presence without bypassing what’s hard.
  • Feel part of a professional home where you can also receive support with your own family and you are no longer walking this path alone.

Kind Words From Students

  • “I was really struggling to find my place/niche as a Doula. Deanna helped me to get clear on my gifts not only as a Death Doula but as a human being. She helped me to see that the person I am has to fit into the business I create. I had been fighting this idea…”

  • Deanna Cochran has been a leader, mentor, and a friend to me for many years now. I recently retained Deanna to provide some professional guidance for me regarding my thoughts on moving forward toward developing my own business. I have a broad background, but lack the many varied seemingly qualifying letters such as RN, PhD, LLC, etc. I trust Deanna and was immediately heartened when she said, “Sarah, no more qualification is needed. Your credentials and experience are enough!” Within our hour together, she helped me to narrow down and focus on the viable business paths I have to pick from, but which I was unable to see and arrive at on my own. I highly recommend anyone who is in need of professional guidance to retain Deanna. My money and time was wisely invested in Deanna and I will continue to work with her as I further develop my business and services.

Our Success Commitment

Directly from Deanna:

“If you fully participate in the program, complete your assignments, communicate with me when you need help, attend our group sessions, and engage with the process—and at the end of your training you still do not have clarity about how you want to serve and what your next steps are—I will continue working with you until you do.

My goal is not simply to help you complete a training. My goal is to help you leave with a clear understanding of your role, your direction, and a practical pathway forward.

You will not be left alone trying to figure it out.”

7-Day Review Period

Choosing a training program is an important decision.

After enrolling, you have seven days to review the materials, explore the classroom, attend sessions if available, and determine whether the program feels like the right fit.

If you decide within the first seven days that the program is not for you, your tuition will be refunded, less a $300 administrative and onboarding fee. You may keep access to the Family Program as our gift.

After seven days, all tuition payments are non-refundable due to the mentoring, support, and resources provided throughout the program.

My intention is simple: I want you to feel confident in your decision before moving forward.

Apply For Mentorship

Once I receive your application, I’ll personally review it and reach out within 48 hours.

If we need to talk before moving forward, we’ll schedule a brief conversation.

If we both feel we are a great fit, then we’ll begin enrollment and
your orientation begins right away.
