Deanna Flores Cochran, RN, Founder of CareDoula® Education is your teacher. A native of Washington, DC and longtime resident of Austin, Texas, Deanna is an internationally known, highly respected leader in end-of-life doula education. Through trial and error, she created a powerfully effective practice model–CareDoula®. Deanna’s mission is to help others succeed. For a history of her groundbreaking initiatives.

The actual course and certification is created for completion within 16 weeks. The program is self-paced, so you can fit it into your schedule. Some complete it in 2-3 months, but most people enjoy it so much they end up taking their time and finish in 4-6 months.

Most people report they spend about 2 – 4 hours per week (depending on their goals) in their study (which includes, assignments, reading suggested books, and business planning).

There is no rush to complete this program during an arbitrary length of time. There is no national requirement to have an end-of-life doula certification, so you may serve a family now without one. Take it step by step. The most important thing is you are well trained and know what you are doing.

No, prior experience in the medical field is NOT necessary. This is a non-medical role. Hospice is the medical healthcare provider. We simply are additional support for the family (we also help hospices too). We provide the tools and training you need to succeed in this non-medical role.

There are so many ways this role can support a person and family. And each person will develop their path based on their own unique skillset. People that have medical backgrounds are equipped to help in ways that people with non-medical backgrounds may not be able to do, that’s true. We need everyone, with every kind of background. There are people out there that will only be able to hear YOUR voice. We each have our own way of being, our own circles of community. That’s why it doesn’t matter who you are. You will affect and be able to help the circles you are in.

The most important thing is we all share a heart for service to the dying, their families and circle of support. We are all from every background you can imagine, our skillsets are varied and so are our interests. No two doulas will offer the same service in the same way. Here, at Certified CareDoula® our differences are celebrated.

Graduates work as independent doulas, with hospices, in consultancy roles with community organizations–there are many options. We help you build YOUR specific service in the program. You are an independent practitioner; this is your own small business.

Hospice is the medical team, the leader in medical care at the end of life.

The end-of-life doula role is a non-medial role. Please understand that the skills to accompany people well, after medical considerations are handled, are all NON-MEDICAL. This is what even healthcare professionals want to learn more about as well!

We do not require in-person training, although we do love getting together. As long as you have a strong internet connection, Certified CareDoula® is available anywhere on any device that you can access the internet.

A Note From Deanna

Not many people wake up one day and decide, “you know, I want to serve the dying.” It does happen but usually how it goes is something like this.

You are a person that people turn to when times are rough. You are the one that seems to show up when others do not or cannot. You are comfortable with dying and death in a way that others are not. You may even be obsessed with it. You find joy in bringing peace and supporting others through their dying time. More people don’t understand you than do.

Then, one day, you hear of ‘end-of-life doula,’ and you go, “WHAT?! Is this a real thing?” You do hours of research.

And you find that, yes, it is. Welcome to the rest of your life!

If this speaks to you, I would love to teach you everything I know, and I know a lot (not everything to be clear, but I can show you a thing or two). What I absolutely do know are people who want to give everything they have to make the dying time better for people and to help reduce suffering in this world. I am here for you when this is your calling and I will show you what it really takes to do this very unique service well.
